New Infographic: This Has Nothing to Do With Brewing ...

... But I'm proud of my first infographic, so I'm posting it here. Being the managing editor for Urban Farm magazine, I get to jump in the middle of heated debates ... as an observer only, of course. Well, the debate between the safety of raw and pasteurized milk has been boiling over as of late, so I decided to do a little project based on some stats and data my pre-algebra-only mind could barely wrap around.

Eventually, I got it and it came down to the misconception that more people get sick from drinking raw milk than pasteurized milk. Although these numbers are true and based on fact, keep in mind that there are fare more drinkers of pasteurized milk than there are raw. So, of 297,000,000 people who drink pasteurized milk about 2, 200 became ill (that we know of). Of the 9,000,000 people who drink raw milk (3.04% of the population), about 1,270 became ill (that we know of).

In the end, which one really is the safer choice? I don't think we'll ever know because of outbreaks, which can get as many as 200,000 people ill, and those who don't go to the hospital.

There are two benefits to raw milk that over pasteurized milk: The fat content of raw goat milk makes it easier on the stomach to digest and there have been proven benefits against allergies in children.

Me? I'm an almond-milk drinker, because I think it's a little strange that we drink another mammal's milk after being weaned. For all I know, maybe we weren't supposed to be weaned off of milk at all? Who am I to judge? So, I don't. You drink what you feel is best and safest for you and your family. I'll stick to beer.
